Viruses: the last taboo? (Dr Leah Fitzsimmons)

Dr Leah Fitzsimmons is currently the University of Birmingham’s Public Engagement with Research (PER) Officer – she works with researchers and academics to help them bring their work to the public. Previously she was a research fellow studying how Epstein-Barr virus drives cell survival in cancer. She has spoken at events all over the UK such as TEDxBrum, consulted on Trust Me I’m a Doctor. She has written and blogged for the Wellcome trust, The Lancet journal, and Voice of Young Science. She is an Ask For Evidence Ambassador. She’s also also trained researchers around the UK, been involved in policy events like Evidence Matters and refuted the Post Truth myth at the Northern Ireland Science Festival.

This talk will explore some virology as well as give a historical perspective on viruses. It will also touch on how viruses are portrayed in culture and the arts and the topic of viruses in space as well as their philosophical implications.
